If you’re confronting someone whose behavior has upset you, one way to diffuse tension is to start by saying “The story I’m making up is…” and continue the sentence with the assumptions you’ve made about that person’s actions.

This not only allows you to explain your feelings to them, it also provides a passive perspective of their behavior while acknowledging that you understand they weren’t purposely trying to hurt you.
